Daniel G. Sherwood enlisted in the 6th New York Cavalry for three years in Rochester, New York. Mustered in as a Private in Company C at Rochester, New York on 17 Oct 1861. Transferred to 14th Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps on 27 Nov 1863. Later transferred to Company A, 18th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps. A member of A. Lincoln Post No. 19 of Bangor, Van Buren County, Michigan.

Daniel G. Sherwood was born in Amenia, Dutchess, New York on 18 Jan 1818. Daniel married Philena {Demming] Sherwood on 3 Dec 1841 in Avon, Livingston, New York.  They had three children, Fredrick E. Sherwood, Henry Sherwood and William Sherwood.  Fredrick E. Sherwood served in Company F, Tenth Michigan Calvary as a private; Henry Sherwood served in Company C, Fourth Michigan Calvary as a sergeant. William Sherwood worked as a clerk in New York.

Daniel worked as a farmer in Michigan. Daniel G. Sherwood died on 24 Mar 1900 in Michigan and is buried at the Breedville Cemetery in Van Buren County, Michigan. Some military records list his first name as "David". Find a Grave Memorial ID 88443284.

Daniel G. Sherwood’s father, Henry Sherwood, was a sergeant in the Detached Calvary Regiment (Warner’s), New York, War of 1812. Daniel G. Sherwood’s mother, Salome Cook was the daughter of Revolutionary War patriot, Solomon Cook who was a Soldier in the Dutchess County Militia, New York during the Revolutionary War. Daniel G. Sherwood’s great-grandfather, Asahel Sherwood served in Webster’s Regiment, New York Militia, Revolutionary War.
