Gen. George Wright Camp No. 1865

With a date of rank of October 6, 2015, Gen. George Wright Camp No. 1865 serves the state of Alaska.  The Gen. George Wright Camp is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

The Camp namesake is Brigadier General George Wright.  Wright was a career U.S. Army officer whose vital Civil War service was defined by maintaining Union control over the vast Department of the Pacific. Taking command in October 1861, Wright successfully secured California's gold supply, suppressed West Coast secessionist sympathy, and managed volatile relations with Native American tribes, all without ever leading troops on an Eastern battlefield. His administrative leadership kept the Pacific coast firmly anchored to the Union until July 1865, when he drowned in the shipwreck of the Brother Jonathan while traveling to his next command, which was the Department of the Columbia.
