Joe Hooker Post No. 20 was based in The Dalles, Oregon. The map at the bottom of the page shows the exact location.
Its namesake is Major General Joseph Hooker (1814-1879), who graduated from West Point in 1837 and established a distinguished early record during the Mexican War. Serving as a staff officer under Generals Taylor and Scott, he earned three brevets for gallantry and merit, reaching the rank of brevet lieutenant colonel. During the Civil War, Hooker rose rapidly through the ranks, proving himself a capable combat officer during the Peninsula Campaign, the Seven Days Battles, Second Bull Run, and Antietam. After commanding the I Corps and later a "Grand Division" at Fredericksburg, he was appointed commander of the Army of the Potomac in early 1863. As army commander, Hooker’s legacy is defined by the Chancellorsville Campaign. While he initially executed a brilliant maneuver to cross the Rappahannock and Rapidan rivers to outflank Robert E. Lee, his momentum was broken by Stonewall Jackson’s flank attack, leading to a Union retreat. During the subsequent Gettysburg Campaign, he skillfully positioned his army to shield Washington and Baltimore but resigned his command just days before the battle following a strategic disagreement with high command. Transferred to the Western Theater, Hooker led the XI and XII Corps to victory at Chattanooga, most notably during the capture of Lookout Mountain. He retired as a major general in the Regular Army in 1868.
The post was organized in 1883, and mustered on 21 November 1883 with fifteen charter members. On 25 September 1884 the post "was obliged to surrender their charter on account of the removal of the force in the Rail Road shops from the Dalles nearly all of their officers and many of their members were thus taken away and the few who remained felt themselves unable to sustain a Post at that place."
Abbreviations used above: "Bty." is short for "Battery". "Co." is short for "Company". "F&S" is short for "Field and Staff".
