Gen. Lyon Post No. 26 was based in Toledo, Oregon. The map at the bottom of the page shows the exact location.
Its namesake is Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861), whose Civil War career centered on his aggressive defense of Missouri. As commander of the St. Louis Arsenal, he preemptively seized a secessionist militia camp in the Camp Jackson Affair. This bold move neutralized immediate threats to federal munitions and forced the pro-Confederate state government to flee the capital, successfully securing Missouri for the Union during the war's critical opening months.
Promoted to Brigadier General, Lyon engaged Southern forces at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861. Leading a surprise attack against superior numbers, he was killed while rallying his troops, becoming the first Union general to die in combat. His relentless, if polarizing, leadership is widely credited with preventing Missouri from formally joining the Confederacy.
The post was mustered in 26 June 1886. During the 2nd quarter of 1888, Gen. Lyon Post No. 26, Toledo, voluntarily surrendered its charter and turned over its property to the Department. It immediately reorganized under its old name and number in Sandy, Clackamas County (5 May 1888).
